Found this on the manufacturers website (Tramontina) so sounds like they do make an effort to be sustainable. "Our factory uses wood from sustainably managed forests and is attentive to the Custody Chain that proves the legality of the extraction and traceability of the wood from its origins to the end customer. To ensure the legality and sustainability of the materials, the company asks all its suppliers to produce documents such as Authorization of Exploration, Environmental Licenses, and Certificate of Compliance with IBAMA (Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Resources). In recognizing the importance of maintaining forests to conserve the balance of nature and restoring degraded areas, since 1992, Tramontina has been investing in reforestation projects in the town of Aurora do Pará, in the state of Pará, 205 km from Belém. Its goals are to restore areas degraded by inadequate use of the soil, and provide its factory with sustainable raw materials.. Currently, Tramontina cultivates and maintains 1,200,000 trees of various species, both native to the Amazon and foreign, species, in an area of 1,500 hectares."
