Q: Is this water bottle dishwasher safe ?

This would not be a good item to put in a dish washer. Especially using the heat option. You should NOT put plastic in the dishwasher with the heat option. Since you are only putting water in in, you should be able to clean by hand and have it 'sanitary' enough. I have one that is similar and it has lasted for years . I have used a bit of white vinegar and be sure NOT to put the cap back on tight.

Q: I washed these with a little bit of soap and water, but there is a smell that keeps coming back from just having water in the bottle. Advice?

Never use soap and water. It costs the plastic and does not kill bacteria. Always rinse with hydrogen peroxide about a teaspoon or more. Make sure it coats every inch of the inside. Dump out and rinse bottle with around half a cup of R.O., alkaline or purified water 3 times. The 1st time rinses away the peroxide the 2nd n 3rd recoat the walls with the water. Never use tap. Then refill and enjoy. Repeat these steps if it still smells. My buddy owns a large RO and whole house water softening business and treats his reusable bottles this way for 25 yrs.

Q: what number plastic is stamped on the bottom?

This Tritan plastic which is BPA-Free. Just because something is #7 doesn’t mean it’s BPA-Free.. Polycarbonate is #7 also, and that’s what everyone freaks out about having BPA in.
