I'd like to also add to use a SMALL hunk of bait. Mice are used to eating small things like seeds or even flakes of oats, so getting them to lick or bite to get inside the curly-part of the trigger will be more likely to set it off. When using new traps, maybe try to not handle it with sweaty hands - ESPECIALLY is you have a pet (it'll smell like a predator). Also tweak the trigger-catch like others say...
