Think of them like compacted tea bags. They go in an espresso machine as a paper wrapped block so that they're easy to clean out. You dont open the bags. They're expensive and you'll get a better coffee from a bag of ground beans. It's not like it's a big hassle to clean out the espresso "scoop".

Q: Can these pods compostable or otherwise recyclable?

As far as I'm aware they're compostable. The coffee grounds are enclosed in a bag of similar material to a tea bag.
