Q: are these baskets slanted? as in, smaller at the bottom?

Yes they are slightly slanted. Mine are 19" in length at the top and 17" in length at the bottom. Hope this helps.

Base length 40 cm width 28 cm measuring outside of underneath of basket.

Yes Becky, the inside measurement of the base is 15 X 10 inches, my bottle of champagne is 12 inches. They are quite deep and also make very useful storage. Best wishes

Shorter end widens to 13" at the top, but only 10" at the bottom. Longer end approx 13" at bottom so will depend upon size of books.
