Q: Where can I find the center to center dimensions for the nipple locations?

The distance between the two port for the short side is 2.76", for the long side is 9.84". These dimensions are for 5"x12" series unit.

Q: I don't understand what this heat exchanger does. Can you please explain how it is used and why?

It is used for water to water heating or cooling application. Hot water enters from right top port(F1) and leaves from right bottom port(F2). Cold water enters from left bottom port(F3) and leaves from left top port(F4). You may need circulation pump if there are permitted pressure loss limits. It is small size, only 5" x 12 " size of plate with 4 ports 1-1/4" MNPT. We also has 3" x 8" with 4 ports 3/4" MNPT and 4" x 12" with 4 ports 1" MNPT. Hope it can solve your questions.

Q: How is this product intended to be mounted? Are there studs or tabs, or is a bracket required?

It can be mounted right on the pipe or you can just strap on the wall. This unit have not brackets or studs that come with it. But if you are using copper pipe to strapped up will be better.
